One Side Up, One Side Down

Hi,

Its me again with another Math question:

If 12 men take 7 days to paint a house, how long will 5 men take to paint the same house?

May I ask ....... If 12 men take 7 days to paint a house, will fewer men take more or less than 7 days to paint the same house?

More?
Yes, you are definitely right!
Therefore, the pattern for this queston is when one side reduce (e.g. men), the other side will increase (e.g. days).

Let's use this logic to solve the question:

If 12 men take 7 days to paint a house, how long will 5 men take to paint the same house?

Solution:

12 men ----> 7 days

1 man (12 men divide by 12) ----> 84 days (7 days multiply by 12)

5 men (1 man multiply by 5) ----> 16.8 days (84 days divide by 5)

Answer: 5 men will take 16.8 days to paint the same house.

I'm glad that you understood how to solve this question.
Thats all for today.
Bye .......

My First Posting

Hi,

My name is Norman Tien.
I am better known as the "laziest" Math Trainer in Singapore.
Hmm .... please don't get the wrong idea. The meaning of laziness does not mean I only eat and sleep, eat and sleep, although I know I am fat.
My students gave me this "lazy" title because they knew that whenever I teach Math, I do not like to beat around the bush. I will use the simplest way and the shortest cut to deliver my teachings.
By the way, may I ask you readers a question?
A lazy person like me, do you think I make mistakes while solving Math?
Yes?
Sorry, the answer is NO!
(because lazy people doesn't like to do corrections! ...)

Great to have an opportunity to share with you the things I enjoy doing .... to teach Math.
In fact, if you do know of someone who is not doing well in Math, doesn't like Math or even hated Math, please let that person know one important thing.
The fact that they are not doing well in Math is not because they are not born with a bigger brain, neither they are not as smart as those who did well in this subject, it is just that those who did well knew certain methods they do not know yet!

Well, if you do not believe in me, find someone who is not good in Math and challenge them that you can help them become an 11 multiplication expert in only 1 minute. Yes, just ONE minute!

Ask that someone, What is the product of 27 x 11?

To get the answer, Just apply this Two Steps strategy ......

Step 1: Split the number 27 so as to form a "gap" in between the digit 2 & 7 (e.g. 2 __ 7 )
Step 2: Add the digit 2 and 7 together and write the sum in the "gap" (e.g. 2 9 7 )

and your answer for 27 x 11 = 297! (check your calculator if you still do not believe)

so now, what is 35 x 11?
385?
Yes, that so easy!

Well, the fact that you can become an 11 multiplication tables expert within a minute clearly shows that Learning Math is not about Drilling and Memorizing. It is more of using the Correct Strategies!

Hope my first posting is of interest to you.
I promise to return with more interesting Math strategies!

See you next week, same time, same BLOG.
Bye!
